What Do You Need To Know About Free Software?
Note: Limited to 200MB data quota per month. AirDroid is one of the best tools you can find to manage your Android device from a Mac and interact with it in every possible way, either by accessing your contacts list, sending texts, sharing images, or receiving notifications on your desktop. This Mac version of the client includes the same features as the webapp but with the advantage of not having to depend on a browser.
Once you enter your details and install the official AirDroid app on your Android (also available on Uptodown), you can access all the different sections of the program. It’s possible to send all kinds of files and even create folders from Windows that will sync remotely. You can also access your entire text message history along with your call log and your contacts list, as well.
One of the more interesting options is the AirMirror service, which will broadcast a sort of mirror image where you can see the screen of your Android and even interact with it via the mouse. This, along with other practical uses, like receiving all your notifications from the notification bar on your Windows desktop, makes AirDroid an especially useful tool.

AirDroid for Mac bridges the gap between your Mac and Android device, allowing them to work more easily together and without the need for a USB cable. In no time, we were sending and answering text messages from our Mac and transferring files from our Android device to our Mac.
AirDroid 3.7.1.0
It’d be silly not to recommend the app we’re comparing the rest to here. It’s only natural to lose a bit of confidence in this service but as the developers explain on their blog, they’re working to solve these security breaches as quickly as possible. The problem is that someone could decrypt the authentication key from AirDroid and connect to devices on that network. But this can be completely avoided by not connecting over a public network – where in any case invulnerability is not that great. [Editor’s Update: The security issues have been resolved as of December 15.] Any sensible person who uses only secured networks with this app, like your home WiFi, has the best app of its kind in AirDroid.
PROS
Intuitive interface: Essentially, because you have to download the app twice, you’re dealing with two different interfaces: the Mac version and the Android version. However, we found both extremely easy to use. The Android app contains all of your menu options on one screen. Likewise, the Mac interface is just as easy to navigate. The menu options reside on the left side of the screen, and, depending on what you select, the files or text messages appear on the right.
Instant notifications: We found no lag time in transferring text messages, photos, and files to and from devices. We selected a JPG from our Mac, and a notification immediately appeared in the File Transfer icon on our Android device. Text message notifications immediately appeared on our Mac, and we were able to read and respond with the same speed.
CONS
More than one install: It shouldn’t be a surprise, but in order to get your Android device and your Mac to “talk” to each other, you must download and install the software not only on your Mac, but also on your Android device.
AirMirror might not work: It is still in Beta, but AirMirror did not work on our Android device because our device is not supported. However, the developers claim to be working with Android manufacturers to get more devices certified.
AirDroid comes out in version 4.0 with a design revamp
We’ve all got apps that we’re obsessed with and install on every device we get ahold of. Apps that are essential for every phone we have. At least that’s what happens to me with one app in particular: AirDroid has been with me for many years now. I could almost say it’s part of the family. This app to control Android devices from a computer gets better with every new update. And with its latest killer revamp, it’s now better than ever.
AirDroid 4.0 has arrived. This software has been taken to the next level with an update where several things have changed, including its design. Everything looks more stylized than ever. Even the logo looks finer, more elegant. This update mainly affects its interface, making everything clearer. The main reason for this is the lower bar that differentiates between the transfer options, available tools, personal details. Everything has a better layout and organization, resolving the chaos of prior versions.
But the changes aren’t just to the UI: one of its main additions is that it lets you exchange files with people nearby, even when you’re not connected to the Internet. Just use its new function, “Nearby,” to swap pics, audio, videos, or whatever you fancy, just so long as both devices have AirDroid installed.
This isn’t the only new thing about version 4.0 as now, among other things, you can close your session on some or all connected devices using any one of them. Or you can pick what screen your calls, messages, or app notifications should appear on. All to get greater control and ease of use.
AirDroid is popular because of how great it is at file exchange, but it’s also way more than that. As we mentioned a good while ago, it has loads of tools (record screen, find your phone, install or uninstall apps…) that now work faster than ever in this new version. That said, don’t forget that to use some of these options you’ll need the desktop client too.
AirDroid has finally fixed its security issues
Ten days or so ago we were discussing a few different alternatives to AirDroid after huge breaches had been discovered in its connectivity system that endangered the security and privacy of the app’s users. The dangers were limited to connections over unsecured networks but it was still a serious issue. Luckily, as of this week we can say the problem has been solved: the new AirDroid update has fixed the security problems.
The news about the AirDroid security breach spread like wildfire and put all its users on high alert. Which was logical given that it was a freaking enormous hole that could allow malicious APKs to be inserted into users’ devices, to terrible effect. Worst of all, the breach had been there for approximately six months. But we repeat: nothing bad was likely to happen as long as users were connected over secured networks. Because we can obviously generalize that connecting to open WiFi networks usually isn’t the best idea in security terms.
But in any case now you can rest easy. The latest update has solved all these security problems with an improved encryption system and updates to its HTTPS communication channels (the secure protocal for hypertext transfer). That last thing is a bit of a surprise, but what’s really important is that everything appears to be fixed.
We advise all Android users to upgrade to version 4.0.0.3, with its package of fixes. Windows and iOS users should do the same thing with version 3.3.5.3. We hope they keep up with the good work they’ve been doing up till now.
BOTTOM LINE
AirDroid for Mac is an extremely useful program for anyone who has different devices. Even if you can’t get AirMirror to work, it’ll save you a lot of time and frustration. For that we recommend it to all users.
