EndNote for Mac: macOS Catalina Compatibility

Apple have released macOS Catalina and have stopped all 32-bit application support with this release – impacting EndNote.

EndNote X9 for macOS users

  • Always have a backup of your EndNote library and current Word document
  • Users should update EndNote before installing the new Mac OS 10.15 Catalina
  • EndNote X9 for macOS has been updated for compatibility with Catalina
    • Existing X9 users will require the X9.3.1 update in order to work which is now available
      • You may be prompted to update the next time you open EndNote in which case, please follow the prompts
      • Otherwise, once you have EndNote open, click EndNote X9 > Check for Updates and follow the prompts
      • If neither of the above options are working, you can also manually download and install the X9.3.1 update – see section Manual Update Instructions For macOS
    • New X9 users can download the X9 installation file as it has been updated for compatibility with MacOS Catalina
    • EndNote Libraries
      • If you’re using a library that was created with a version prior to X9.3, you will receive the following message:

“This library was created using an earlier version of EndNote and needs to be converted for use with this version of EndNote. A new, converted library will be created that can only be used with X9.3 and later, but the original library will not be changed. To continue using the library in X9.2 and earlier, use the original library or use EndNote sync. Continue with the library conversion”

  • Click Yes to convert your library to the new 64bit format and EndNote will make a converted copy
  • The original will remain in case you need to use it with older versions of EndNote
  • You can use sync to move your data to different systems and or versions

EndNote X8 for macOS users

  • Since Apple has made the decision to drop all 32-bit application support, Clarivate expect that macOS 10.15 Catalina will not run EndNote X8 and earlier
  • Clarivate do not recommend upgrading to Catalina with EndNote X8 and earlier as they expect major compatibility issues
  • The two options are:
    • Upgrade to X9
    • Don’t upgrade to Catalina if you prefer to keep working with EndNote X8

Troubleshooting EndNote for Mac

Mac OS information

MacOS versions 10.12 (Sierra), 10.13 (High Sierra), and 10.14 (Mojave) contain features to save the contents of the Documents folder in iCloud and to “optimize” storage by storing less-used files only in iCloud online. EndNote for Mac libraries stored in iCloud, even when stored on both the hard drive and online, are subject to corruption over time. If you choose to store your documents in iCloud, we suggest creating a separate folder in your home folder and saving your EndNote libraries there.  Do not store EndNote libraries in iCloud or any other cloud-syncing folder, and do not store EndNote libraries in the Documents folder if you have selected the option to store documents in iCloud.

Tips for success:

  • EndNote for Mac libraries are made up of two parts: the .enl file and the .Data folder. These two parts must be kept together, both are needed for the library to work correctly.
  • EndNote for Maclibraries should be kept on your computer’s hard drive. Storing and editing libraries on a network drive can lead to corruption and performance issues.

Problems with browsers

Safari and EndNote

We recommend you use Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome as your browser when searching databases to export references to your EndNote Library. The Safari browser will always send the reference to the downloads folder first which means an extra step for you to put it in your EndNote LIbrary.

What’s new in EndNote for Mac X9

  • Edit Reference feature has now been removed from the context dialog when using Edit & Manage Citations to edit notes
  • Issue with reference indents in Configure Bibliography tool is resolved
  • Start with Bibliography Number field now constrained to 4 digits
  • EndNote online’s CWYW commands for Mac will now remember user credentials between sessions.
  • Updated PubMed search to use new APIs
  • Corrected issue with clearing previous search results after a PubMed search
  • Updated branding in the installer
  • Get More on the Web link in Help now routes to correct site.
  • Corrected naming issue with compressed libraries
  • Corrected stability issue with the Compressed Library menu option
  • Enhancements to PDFKit memory allocation
  • Delete button now properly shows when multiple records are selected
  • Share Group option greyed out when shared library is opened by a sharee
  • Groups Shared by Others now respects the sorting of the Groups Pane
  • File-type associations for .ris, .ciw, .nbib, and .ovd now added

Tips on EndNote for Mac OS X

For system and hardware and word processor compatibility

When downloading references from databases on a Mac:

To start the EndNote for Mac program in Macintosh and open an EndNote library: Open the EndNote folder (in the Applications folder) and double-click the EndNote program icon.

To configuring Mac for importing to EndNote:

After installing EndNote, Mac users often need to configure their system to open downloaded files with the application. After attempting to export from a database or Google Scholar:

  • Go to the Downloads folder
  • Control-click or right click on the file
  • Select Get info
  • Go to Open with
  • If EndNote does not appear in the list, select Other and  search for EndNote.
  • Once EndNote has been selected, click on Change all.

Transferring Files from Mac to PC / PC to Mac

  • Mac to PC: If transferring EndNote files from a Mac to a PC, add .ENL for an EndNote Library (i.e. MYLIB.ENL). Older versions of EndNote use .LIB as the library extension. Newer versions of EndNote will recognize either .ENL or .LIB as the proper extension.
  • PC to Mac: There is a free software program that converts all PC filters, connection files and styles to a Mac format. From the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands: http://mac.unimaas.nl/EndNote.html

In some browsers direct export does not work, so citations will be converted to text files for importing. To import a text-formatted file citation into EndNote:

  • Put EndNote in your dock by starting the EndNote program
  • Save the citation to the desktop
  • Drag the citation to the EndNote icon

After this, the EndNote program opens and you are prompted to choose an EndNote Library into which to import the citation.

NOTE: EndNote operating slowly? A backup program may be running in the background and slowing down the process. Try moving the EndNote files to a separate folder on the drive (at its own level).

EndNote for Mac and PowerPoint on MacIntosh computers

Currently, EndNote works with PowerPoint on Windows but does not work with PowerPoint on a Mac . EndNote on a Mac will work with Apple Pages and Microsoft Word only.

General Information:

  • Macintosh uses the Return key instead of the Enter key
  • close a reference in Macintosh: press the COMMAND  + W
  • delete custom groups: CONTROL + click on the group name to display menu and select Delete Group
  • select individual references: Hold down the COMMAND key and click
  • select a range of references: Use SHIFT + CLICK

Restoring EndNote Tools in Word for MacIntosh Computers

NOTE: There was a compatibility issue with EndNote X7 and the MacIntosh OS Sierra which has been corrected in the latest version X8.

A Cite While You Write patch is available for EndNote X7 that addresses the compatibility issue with Office 2016/Office 365 on Macintosh [the Endnote toolbar tab not appearing in the Word menu]. The patch will become automatically available after successful installation of X7.

To restore Macintosh EndNote Tools in Word 2011:

First, try rebooting your computer. If that does not work, try the following:

  • Install the EndNote update(s)
  • Open EndNote, and go to the EndNote menu. Select Customizer from the EndNote menu. Check the box in front of the Cite While You Write option. Click next until the Customizer is finished. Open a library. Then open Word and check the Tools menu for the EndNote submenu.

If the tools do not appear:

  1. Close Word and EndNote.
  2. Open your hard drive and go to the folder: EndNote X-: Applications:EndNote X-:Cite While You Write
  3. Copy the file EndNote CWYW Word 2011.bundle
  4. Go to the folder Applications:Microsoft Office 2011:Office:Startup:Word and paste the copied file
  5. Start Word, go to Word > Preferences and click on File Locations
  6. Make sure the Startup folder is set by highlighting Startup and clicking on Modify. Select the folder Applications:Microsoft Office 2011:Office:Startup:Word and click Choose
  7. Click OK and close Word.
  8. Start EndNote and then start Word.

If the tools still do not appear:

  • Change Word Preferences so it will not automatically open up the document gallery (which can prevent EndNote from connecting)

EndNote X9 is used by millions of researchers, scholarly writers, students, and librarians to search online bibliographic databases, organize their references, images and PDFs in any language, and create bibliographies and figure lists instantly. Instead of spending hours typing bibliographies, or using index cards to organize their references, they do it the easy way-by using EndNote!
