As of today, Greenshot is available in the Mac AppStore for all Macs running OS X 10.10 and newer.

By the way, developing Greenshot for Windows causes costs for us as well. As with all other open source software, you don’t really have to donate but we developers rely on our users to do so.

Why is it not open source?

That’s mainly because of the competition. There’s a lot of good software for OS X out there but only a few supply their source code, so everyone has to figure the code out by themselves. There seem to be some unwritten rules in the market and we don’t want to break them. This may change in the future but for now, we’ll stick with closed source for Mac.

Will the Windows version be closed source too?

No. Never. You can trust on that. Windows has a completely different ecosystem and we are convinced that open source is a good thing, so we’ll leave everything as it is right now.free greenshot for mac

Greenshot 1.2.8 Mac OS update

While many of you are working from home at the moment we noticed an increase of downloads escpacially of the mac version of Greenshot and so we finally managed to put out a new release of Greenshot. It mainly fixes some issues with Catalina.

As you might have noticed, Catalina introduced some major changes regarding security and so every app requiring screen recording needs permission by the user. When you started Greenshot on Catalina for the first time, you got a popup window telling you so, but you might have ignored it (don’t we all do this?). If so, all your screenshots will only have your desktop background image and nothing else. To fix this, go to “System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> Privacy -> Screen Recording” and activate Greenshot.

We are very sorry for not being able to release for such a long time but we all really had so much going on in our private lives that it just wasn’t manageable for us. I hope, this is going to change in the near future. Anyway, we are still very excited about developing Greenshot and have great plans for the future to keep Greenshot a big part of the productivity ecosystem.

Greenshot is a light-weight screenshot software tool with the following key features:

  1. Quickly create screenshots of a selected region, window or fullscreen.
  2. Easily annotate, highlight or obfuscate parts of the screenshot.
  3. Export the screenshot in various ways: save to file, copy to clipboard, attach to e-mail.
  4. and a lot more options simplyfying creation of and work with screenshots every day.

NOTE: As some guys didn’t find out how to start working with Greenshot, here’s how: On the top of your screen is a clock. Somewhere on the left of it, you find a small G-icon. Click it. You also find the default hotkeys in the menu.

NOTE FOR CATALINA AND ABOVE: MacOS Catalina introduced major security changes and now some function regarding the operating system (like file handling, camera and also screenshots) needs to be given permission by the user. Unfortunately you’ll have to enable screenshots for Greenshot in the system preferences. Go to “Security & Privacy” -> “Privacy” -> “Screen recording” and enable Greenshot.

WARNING for long-time Greenshot users: Greenshot for Mac is NOT as feature-rich as you might expect when you were using it on the PC before. We are doing our very best, but it may take a few months until you find the feature you are missing.

When you’re just writing an AppStore review for Greenshot, we cannot answer your requests! Please keep that in mind.

What’s New

Fixed issue with not being able to find Greenshot in the System Preferences.
