Many times, you may need to use a different Microsoft account that has the Office 365 license. Or, you want to remove the license file from an existing computer to install and activate Office 365 on another computer. It helps when you reach the maximum device limit.
It is straightforward to remove the Office 365 license files from your Mac computer – no matter which version of macOS you are using. Before getting started with this tool, you must know the Office version you are using. As mentioned earlier, it can remove license files of Office 365, 2019, and 2016 only. If you are using an older version of Microsoft Office, this tool may not be handy for you.
How to remove Office license from Mac
To remove Office 365/2019/2016 license files from Mac, follow these steps-
- Download Microsoft Office for Mac License Removal Tool from the official website
- Open the installation wizard and follow screen instructions

You need to download Microsoft Office for Mac License Removal Tool from the official website. You should get a .pkg file in your Downloads folder. Double-click on this file to open the installation wizard.
It shows a warning. If you use this tool to delete the license from your computer, you cannot undo it. You must have to sign in to your Microsoft account again which has a valid Office 365 license. If you are okay with this, click the Continue button.
In the meantime, you must agree to the terms. After that, you should select a location where you want to install the Microsoft Office for Mac License Removal Tool. If you want to go with the default location, click the Install button in the Installation Type tab.
After that, enter your account password to begin the installation.
If everything goes correctly, you should be greeted with a success message that looks something like this-
It means your license files have been removed from your computer and the Office is ready to be activated with a new license. To activate Office 365 with a new license, you need to open an Office app such as Word or Excel first. Then, you need to sign in to your Microsoft account.

This tool can also help if you’ve subscribed to Microsoft 365 but previously had a one-time purchase of Office for Mac on your computer, and aren’t seeing certain subscription features. This can be due to your copy of Office still using the license of your one-time purchase and not your subscription.
Before you begin
- 1. Check what license your version of Office is currently using.
- 2. If you aren’t uninstalling the Office apps to reinstall them later, quit out of all Office apps. If you’ve already uninstalled Office, go to the next step.
Download and run the license removal tool
- 1. Download the license removal tool.
- 2. Open the .pkg file from your Mac’s Downloads folder.
Note: If you get an “unidentified developer” error, try opening the file by holding Control + clicking the file > Open.
- 3. Select Continue and follow the prompts in the setup wizard.
Caution: We recommend you double-check that you have the correct account info ready by logging into Office.com/signin and checking for the license you want to activate with.
- 4. When you’re ready to complete the license removal, select Install. You may need to enter your Mac’s local admin account password.
After the tool successfully removes licenses, select Close.
- 5. Now open any Office app and sign in to activate with the email account associated with your Office for Mac license. If you’re troubleshooting an issue, you may need to reinstall Office before signing in.
After you’ve successfully activated, restart your computer and then you’re good to go!
Note: If your account has both a Microsoft 365 for Mac license and a one-time purchase associated with it, you’ll be prompted to choose which license you want to activate with. We recommend always choosing Microsoft 365 for Mac if available.
