Maplestory 2 for Mac: Download [UPDATE, SERVER, GUIDE, MORE] Updated 2022

After a long wait, Maplestory 2 for Mac corp has released on Mac. There are MapleStory M, MapleStory PC & MapleStory Windows versions too.

Before getting into the Download Mac version of maplestory, you should know that it also needs some private server to play. The goal is to level up, beat your opponents just like any other MMORPG game.

MapleStory 2 Mac Guide

AFAIK MapleStory relies too much on software libraries and technologies exclusive to Windows for it to be run on any other platform, even if Wine or Play on Linux was used. OS X isn’t a suitable choice for gaming nowadays anyway.

However, if you really want to play using your Macbook, I’m pretty sure you could do so by installing Windows aside your pre-existing macOS via Boot Camp. That way you can switch between Windows and macOS whenever you need by restarting your machine. Then you could install MapleStory on the Windows partition of your machine.

Can You Play MapleStory 2 on Mac?

There is so little demand from mac users for a mac-native client that, even if it was possible with the lack of software libraries between windows and mac, there’s just not enough demand to warrant creating a new client on a new OS from the ground up and then supporting it in tandem with a windows client that is arguably already enough of a mess as it is without a split of resources.

And given how trivial it is nowadays to simply dual-boot two different operating systems, there’s no real need for a mac-native client. Everything on the first page of google results for “how to play maplestory on mac” say “just dual boot”.

It might not offer native macOS support, but there is a way to play MapleStory on your Mac – here’s how.

MapleStory shot to fame when it was released back in the early 2000s, and despite the game being out for quite some time, it still features a huge fan base. The 2D side-scrolling MMO transports players to the Maple World with the aim of defeating monsters and developing their characters skills and abilities. Sounds great, right? Mac gamers wouldn’t know, as the game has never officially supported macOS/Mac OS X.maplestory mac download

Don’t get disheartened though, as we’ve found a way for gamers to play MapleStory on Mac – and here’s how.

Nvidia GeForce Now for Mac

The service, currently available in beta form in the UK, Europe and the US, allows Mac gamers a great and easy way to play any game from Steam or regardless of whether it offers macOS/Mac OS X support, or how powerful your Mac is. You can run the latest graphically-demanding PC games on a basic Mac Mini if you really want to.

How is this witchcraft managed? It’s all down to Nvidia server sites scattered across Europe and the US which handle all the processing required by the games. When you select a game you’d like to play on your Mac, Nvidia’s impressively powerful servers (which we’re told provides the equivalent to GTX 1080 performance) run the game remotely before sending it to your Mac via the internet.

The best part?

Every game that’s available to play on GeForce Now for Mac has been optimised for streaming, meaning you’ll be getting the best quality possible without having to delve in and tweak the graphics settings yourself.

Oh, and Nvidia keeps a cached version of every game available on Steam and on their servers, meaning there’s no waiting around while the game downloads. You should be playing the game within around 30 seconds of hitting the play button!

Of course, the performance will somewhat depend on your internet speeds and location of the servers, as someone with high-speed internet that lives 500 miles from a server site will get better response times than someone with slow internet in more remote areas.

With that being said, we’ve generally been impressed with the response times provided by GeForce Now for Mac when connected to Wi-Fi and Ethernet, although admittedly we have access to 200mb+ internet speeds not available in many parts of the UK.

The service is completely free to use while it’s in beta too, allowing prospective Mac gamers to dive in right now and make the most of the service. Nvidia has reassured Macworld UK that he service will stay free until at least early 2018, if not longer.

Once you’ve got access, it’s as simple as signing into your Steam account, selecting MapleStory and hitting that play button! You’ll be playing in no time.

Boot Camp

But what if you don’t have access to a high-speed internet connection to use Nvidia’s streaming service? Don’t fret as there is another way to play MapleStory on your Mac, but it will come at a cost of performance and storage space. Full disclaimer: we haven’t tested MapleStory specifically with this method, so continue at your own risk.

If you’re willing to give it a go, another way to play MapleStory on Mac is to split your Mac hard drive and run Windows 10 on a separate partition using Apple’s Boot Camp software. This method requires you to (semi-permanently) partition your hard drive and sacrifice a big chunk of Mac storage space, so consider your options before doing so.

First off,

you will need to go to Virtual Box’s website and download their latest version of the Virtual Machine and the extension pack. Under the download section, there will be an option under VirtualBox platform packages named, “OS X Hosts“(<– File Download), download and install that. Then, click on “All Supported platforms“(<– File Download) under “Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack”. Keep both of these in a place you will remember, I chose the desktop.

you will need to download the Windows 10 OS from the Microsoft Website. Once arrived at the link, click the drop down bar and select Windows 10. Hit confirm. Once confirmation is complete, select your desired language and hit confirm. Once confirmation is complete, download the 64-Bit version. If you are having errors with the windows 10 OS running through VirtualBox, try 32-Bit.

install and open VirtualBox VM. Once opened, on the top left you will see a button, “New”. Select this option. We are now creating a new version of the Virtual Machine that will be Windows 10. Type in the name of your Virtual Machine, Windows 10 is a good name. Hit continue. You are now at the memory allocation page. This is where you designate how much of your Mac’s RAM will be dedicated to the Windows 10 OS.

In my experience, 3000MB(3 GB) will do the trick. If you are experience lag in-game, try upping the amount of RAM. NOTE: Only up your RAM to the amount that your computer can handle. I don’t recommend allocating more than 70% of your Mac’s RAM to the Windows 10 OS. Hit continue. You will be brought to the hard disk page. select, “Create a virtual hard disk now”, and click create. The next page is about the Hard Disk file type, make sure you select VDI(Virtual Disk Image), and hit continue. Next page, select, “Dynamically Allocated”.

These means that the Virtual Machine will only use space on your Mac’s physical Hard Disk. Hit continue. The next page is how much space you will be allowing your Windows 10 OS to use. 32 GB is fine for Maplestory, it depends on the application you are looking to run. Click create.

once your VirtualMachine is created, we want to apply Windows 10 to it. To do this, click on your desired VitualMachine and click “settings” in the top left of the VirtualBox window. Next, click “storage”. Inside of the storage tree box, on the bottom will be an ISO disk that says, “Empty”, select this, then on the right outside of the box click on the other ISO disk.

Select the option that says, “Choose Virtual Optical Disk File”. Here is where you will select the Windows 10 OS that we downloaded from the Windows 10 website earlier. Once you have it located, double click it. This will bind the Windows 10 OS to the VirtualMachine you created. Click ok.

click on the VirtualMachine you created, click “Run” on the top of the VirtualBox window, and boom! Your version of Windows 10 on a Mac. Once you go through the installation process of the Windows 10 OS, you will be brought to your Windows 10 desktop. Open up Microsoft edge, download and install Maplestory, and there you have it!

IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING “Sorry this application cannot run under a virtual machine” ERROR, FOLLOW THESE STEPS:

  • 1. While on VirtualBox Windows 10 desktop, click on the windows button, and search “run” to open run window.
  • 2. Type into the box, “regedit” hit enter
  • 3. Open the folder “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > HARDWARE > DESCRIPTION > System”
  • 4. On the bottom on the list, you will see a VGA file named, “VideoBiosVersion”. Double click it.
  • 5. You will see characters highlighted inside of the box. delete EVERYTHING inside of this box. Close out of everything once this is done.

Maplestory for Mac suggest providing your Boot Camp partition with as much storage as possible, as the game and operating system will take a considerable amount of space – MapleStory is 14GB while Windows 10 requires around 20GB. Admittedly you can change the size of your partition once you’ve installed Windows 10, but it can create issues

If you want to go down the Boot Camp route, take a look at our instructions on how to run Windows 10 on Mac using Boot Camp. Once it’s installed, simply install Steam and MapleStory and game on!
