Ring App for Mac Catalina 2022

Ring App for Mac has made it easier for Mac users to manage its video doorbell with the introduction of its app for OS X. Like its mobile apps, the Mac app lets you monitor your ring devices, and you can even watch live video from your doorbell.

The Ring app for Mac will ask you to login with your Ring account, or sign up for one if you haven’t already. You can get started by adding your video doorbell, chime, or Stick Up cam to the app. It will give you a history of your use of these devices, such as when you answered a call from your doorbell, or when motion was detected. You can also use the app to manage your Ring account.

Downloading and Updating the Ring App

Ring has promised HomeKit integration as far back as 2016, but when Amazon bought the company in 2018 many thought this would kill off any chance of HomeKit support, given it and Siri are a clear rival to Amazons own Alexa platform. GearBrain has also searched the database and can confirm, as of May 14, the Ring Video Doorbell Pro and Ring Spotlight Cam are both there, and listed as HomeKit devices.

Other models of Ring doorbell, like the Video Doorbell Elite, are not listed, but this could soon change. GearBrain has also discovered that the August Doorbell Cam Pro appears in the database and is listed as a HomeKit device. This comes just two months after August said HomeKit integration was a long-term possibility for the Doorbell Cam Pro.

The addition of these devices comes after Apple removed all smart video doorbells from its customer-facing HomeKit pages (as opposed to the MFI database lookup page) in July 2018.

But once that software update arrives, Apple users will be able to operate their Ring Doorbell Pro without using the Ring app at all (once it has been set up for the first time).

Instead, they will be able to view the Rings camera and speak to visitors through the microphone within the Home app, which is available on iOS and Mac.

They will also be able to use the Home app to create automations, where a press of the Rings doorbell button has a number of things happen through a HomeKit-compatible smart home.

With Apples big WWDC event taking place in June, we wouldnt be surprised to see an announcement made by Ring, Amazon or Apple here – and possible August, too.

WWDC kicks off with a keynote address led by Apple boss Tim Cook on June 3.

Where to Find Your Ring Device’s MAC Address

You may need to find your Ring Device’s MAC address, which is the network location of your device. You will need this if you’re prioritizing your device to a specific IP address in your Wi-Fi router for a stronger connection or troubleshooting with Ring Community Support. Below are the 3 places you can find it:

  1. In the Ring application – follow these steps
    1. Open Ring app > Tap the menu in top left corner > Tap “Devices” > Select desired Ring device > Tap “Device Health” > Look at “device details” section
      1. Note: This is not applicable for Alarm device. Only Cams and Doorbells.
  2. On the Ring device:
    1. Doorbells – Look on the back of the device
    2. Security Cams – Look near the power cord, near mounting connection, on the back.
    3. Alarm – Look at the Base Station, it is located underneath it.
    4. Chime Pro –  Look at the underside of the Chime Pro.
  3. On the box: usually near the barcode or the bottom side of the box.

Ring Macos App: How to Make Your Mac’s Microphone Work

Tips n Tricks

Version 2.1.0 (680) of the Ring app for MacOS does not appear to request permission from MacOS to use your Mac’s microphone, and as a result, newer versions of MacOS may not perform 2-way voice communication with the Ring doorbell. You can hear what’s happening at your door, but you cannot respond.

I bought the ring doorbell precisely so that my disabled wife (who has no iOS or Android device but uses her Mac laptop constantly) can speak to people at the door – so it was a significant problem for us that the mic wouldn’t work.ring app for macos

There IS a work around, but it’s not for the faint of heart; it’s pretty involved and technical. Here’s how you do it.

  1. Restart your Mac and hold down Command-R until the apple logo and progress bar appear. This will boot your Mac into recovery mode.

  2. You may see a window asking you to select a language. If so, make your choice and click the arrow button to continue.

  3. Select Utilities / Terminal from the menu bar

  4. In the terminal window type: csrutil disable …and hit return. You will see a message confirming you have disabled System Integrity Protection. We will re-enable this before we’re done.

  5. Select Terminal/Quit Terminal from the menu bar

  6. Select Apple Menu/Restart from the menu bar. Log into your Mac when prompted.

  7. In Finder, select Go/Utilities from the menu bar

  8. Double click “Terminal” in the Utilities folder

  9. In terminal, carefully type this: sqlite3 ~/Library/Application\ Support/com.apple.TCC/TCC.db
    …and hit return.

  10. At the sqlite prompt, type this:INSERT INTO access VALUES('kTCCServiceMicrophone','com.ring.mac',0,1,1,NULL,NULL,NULL,'UNUSED',NULL,0,1541440109); …and hit return.

  11. At the sqlite prompt, type this: .exit …and hit return. Be sure to include the initial period (.) or the exit command won’t work.

  12. Select Terminal/Quit Terminal from the menu bar

  13. That should grant permission for the Ring application to use your microphone. Now we need to re-enable System Integrity Protection. Repeat steps 1-6, except in step 4 type “enable” instead of “disable”. This is an important step, I strongly advise you not to skip it.

  14. You can confirm that this procedure has worked by selecting Apple/System Preferences, then Security & Privacy, then click the Privacy tab and select “Microphone” on the left side of the window. “Ring” should now appear on the list of apps with microphone permission.

Now you should be able to use the intercom feature using the Ring app for MacOS.

Conclusion

For the record, I learned of this method from an online discussion regarding the game “Heroes Of The Storm”. Players found that they couldn’t use voice chat with the game in MacOS Mojave, and this was the solution they found.

Evermore smart home device makers are turning to HomeKit, buoyed by Apples string reputation for privacy, security, and the protection of sensitive user data.

Given these devices – many fitted with microphones and cameras – and designed for use in and around the home, manufacturers may well see Apple and HomeKit as their preferred option, even if certification can be a more involved process than gaining compatibility with other platforms like Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.
