Run Other Computer OS Alongside Your macOS

VMware for Mac Fusion is a software virtualization hypervisor—or virtual machine monitor—developed by VMware for Mac computers. This software tool gives you a virtual machine and allows your Intel-based Mac to run operating systems such as  Microsoft Windows and Linux alongside its macOS operating system. VMware Fusion lets you have the power to run several OS on your Mac with all of their applications—without having to reboot. It’s simple enough for home users and powerful enough for IT professionals, developers, and businesses.vmware for macos high sierra

Game for Anything

You can run nearly any operating system on your Mac with VMware Fusion. As long as it’s supported and you’ve got enough space for them, you can get them to work alongside your collection of OS. From lesser-known Linux distributions to the latest Windows 10 release, there’s not much limit you’ll see. You can even connect with VMware’s vSphereESXi, and Workstation products to launch, control, and manage both virtual machines and physical host machines. It’s a great set-up for businesses needing such a complex computer system

A Powerful Development Platform

If you’re a developer, VMware Fusion makes it easy for you to test on almost any OS and app on your Mac. You can freely test out your work while your files are secure. The pro version of Fusion is integrated with modern development tools like Docker and Vagrant, too, so it’s much more convenient to work on your apps.  There’s no need to be worried about losing progress, either. You can run an entire virtual cloud stack on a single Mac so you can go all-out and design complex software solutions on your machine.

Quick Adapter

In the corporate setting, you can configure user settings like the abilities to copy-and-paste, drag-and-drop, use shared folders, and gain access to USB devices with VMware Fusion, as well. It’s a convenient and easy way to secure important data within the business. However, Fusion is also great for personal home use, as running other OS can give you access to apps exclusive to those operating systems. You can make your PC flexible, too—keeping two OS apart or combining them, and even switching old and new versions of an operating system.vmware for macos download

Fierce Competition

As a virtual machine monitor for Mac, VMware Fusion operates reliably and is powerful enough to support several operating systems. The amount of supported platforms is astounding, as well. However, when compared to its rival Parallels Desktop, it’s slower in performance and less beginner-friendly. Its users cannot deny that it’s a good software to use, though, so if your criteria matches what VMware Fusion offers, give it a try.

PROS

  • Tons of supported OS
  • Flexible with what you need
  • Integrated with development tools
  • Compatible with other VMware products

CONS

  • Slower than its rival
  • A bit confusing to beginners
  • Not great with 3D gaming
  • User interface isn’t easy to use

With VMware Fusion, you can run Windows and OS X applications side by side on your Mac. The virtualization software provides lots of installation options and many ways to integrate Windows into your Mac workflow.vmware for mac vs parallels

What Do You Need To Know About Free Software?

PROS

Installation options: VMware Fusion offers a handful of options for creating a virtual machine on your Mac. You of course can create a virtual machine from scratch with a Windows 10 disk image. If you previously installed Apple’s Boot Camp, you can create a virtual machine that directly uses your Boot Camp volume, or you can copy your Boot Camp volume to a new virtual machine. You can also import into Fusion virtual machines you’ve created with Parallels Desktop and Microsoft Windows Virtual PC.

Migration help: VMware Fusion includes a migration assistant to move your apps, settings, and documents from a Windows computer to a virtual machine.

Run Mac and Windows side by side: You don’t need to reboot to change operating systems, as you must with Apple’s Boot Camp. With Fusion, you can run both OSes at the same time. And unlike Boot Camp, you can run Fusion and the virtual machine from an external drive. (Boot Camp needs to be installed on an internal hard drive.) You aren’t limited to Windows, either; you can run another version of OS X or Linux in Fusion as well.

Well integrated: Copy and paste or drag and drop files between Mac and Windows environments, and copy and paste between Mac and Windows apps. You can use the Windows 10 Store, the Edge browser, and Cortana. Fusion includes support for DirectX 10 and OpenGL 3.3.

Multiple ways to work in Windows: You can run Windows full screen or side by side with the Mac environment. Or you can keep it out of sight and access it from a Windows Start menu from the Mac menu bar and launch Windows apps from the dock.

CONS

Resource intensive: Running a virtual machine strains system resources, so you’ll see overall operational degradation if you don’t have a moderately well-equipped and current Mac.
